This Week: Introduction to the Old Testament

A simple path from reading to real understanding

The 6 C's:

A framework to guide your scripture study

A Framework That Changed My Study

To guide my personal scripture study (and when preparing talks and lessons), I developed a framework for approaching the scriptures that has enhanced, enriched, and deepened my understanding and learning of the gospel.

It has also made my study more enjoyable and increased my appreciation for these sacred works.

I refer to this framework as "The 6 C's" (in honor of most of my high school report cards).

This framework involves engaging with the scriptures from six perspectives:

  • Context What can I learn from the circumstances and setting of the passage—the people involved, history, culture, and surrounding scriptures?

  • Communication — Who is speaking or writing, to whom, and why? What can I learn from how the message is delivered?

  • Content — What is described, explained, or taught in this passage? What is it actually about?

  • Correlation — How does this passage connect with other scriptures and official Church teachings? (outward connections)

  • Connections — How does this passage connect to my life—my experiences, struggles, goals, and questions? (inward connections)

  • Conduct — How can I apply this in my life? What will I do as a result that will propel my progression on the path of discipleship?

I have found that investigating and pondering on these 6 C's when studying a passage of scripture has resulted in the words on the page coming to life. It has been an incredibly powerful aid in guiding my learning and teaching of the scriptures.

You don't have to do this alone.

Each weekly learning guide on Learn of Him is built on the 6 C's. I've done the research on Context, Communication, Content, and Correlation so you can focus on what matters most: connecting the scriptures to your life and deciding what you'll do about it.

In Every Passage, Look for the Savior

I've found that the more I use the 6 C's, the more I see Jesus Christ in the scriptures—even in passages where I didn't expect to find Him. The framework isn't the point.

He is.

As you study, ask yourself:

The scriptures testify of Him. The 6 C's simply help you see Him more clearly.

No matter which C you start with, let it lead you to Him

How Learn of Him Can Help

The Church provides excellent Come, Follow Me resources.

Learn of Him is here to add to your experience—not replace it—by gathering trusted resources and practical study helps

in one place.

What Learn of Him offers:

  • Weekly Learning Guides — Built on the 6 C's framework with context, insights, and study prompts for each week's reading

  • Pearls — Short, focused micro-lessons you can read in 5-10 minutes

  • Resources — Curated books, articles, podcasts, apps, and tools to deepen your learning and support your teaching

Making the 6 C's Work for You

The 6 C's are lenses, not a checklist. You don't need to use all six every time you open your scriptures. Pick one or two that spark your curiosity, and let your study grow from there.

When you're studying on your own

Use the 6 C's as questions to consider as you read. Start with whichever C draws you in. Some days you might focus on Context; other days you might skip straight to Connections and Conduct. There's no wrong way to use them.

When you're using Learn of Him weekly learning guides

Each weekly learning guide on Learn of Him is built on the 6 C's. I've already done the work on Context, Communication, Content, and Correlation—the research, the cross-references, the background. You can focus on what matters most: Connections (how it applies to your life) and Conduct (what you'll do about it).

When you're teaching

Use Context and Communication to reduce confusion. Use Content and Correlation for doctrinal clarity. Use Connections to help learners engage personally. End with Conduct—a simple invitation to act.

Short on time?

You don't need all six to have a meaningful study. Here's a simple guide:

  • 5 minutes — Content Connections Conduct

  • 15 minutes — Context Content Connections Conduct

  • Deep dive — All 6 C's
